Founded in 1993, Universitetssenteret på Svalbard (The University Centre in Svalbard) is a non-profit public higher-education institution located in the rural setting of the small town of Longyearbyen (population range of under 2,500 inhabitants), Svalbard. Officially recognized by the Kunnskapsdepartementet, Norge (Ministry of Education of Norway), Universitetssenteret på Svalbard (UNIS) is a very small coeducational Norwegian higher education institution. Universitetssenteret på Svalbard (UNIS) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study. This 29 years old Norwegian higher-education institution has a selective admission policy based on students' past academic record and grades. International students are welcome to apply for enrollment. UNIS also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students including a library, housing, as well as administrative services.
